Expectations & Grading
Mr. Worrell and I are both very excited about having you in physical education. Students at SDC receive two 45 minute periods of physical education each week. Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for their scheduled days. The following rules and expectations will be implemented:
· Safety first – with self and equipment
· Stop and listen when teachers are talking
· Play by the rules
· Respect for others and property/equipment
· Dress properly for physical activity – wear athletic type shoes, pants, shorts, or skorts. Please DO NOT wear sandals, platform shoes, dress shoes, boots, heely’s, or skirts/dresses on PE days.
All students in physical education will receive 2 grades (subject area and conduct). The subject grades are based on a minimum of nine assessment grades a semester. We will use a variety of ways to assess progress at the elementary level such as tests, quizzes, discussion, participation, rubrics, homework, self-assessments, skills tests, oral responses, writings and direct observations. Students are graded using the following areas each 9 weeks:
· Participation 36 points
· Effort 18 points
· Rules of game/activity 18 points
· Skill Development 18 points
· Sports Etiquette 10 points
o Total 100 points
Grading scale
2nd grade – 5th grade Kindergarten – 1st grade
90 – 100 = A 80 – 100 = S (satisfactory)
80 – 89 = B 70 – 79 = N (needs improvement)
70 – 79 = C Below 70 = U (unsatisfactory)
Conduct Grade
A conduct grade will be given in physical education every nine weeks. Rules, expectations and consequences have been discussed and modeled with your child. The rules and consequences are posted and clearly stated. If there is a behavior problem, the parent will be contacted by telephone or in writing. Conduct grade is based on listening, following directions, showing self control, and respect for others and equipment. Each student will have the opportunity to earn 2 points for the items above each time he/she comes to PE.
· One point is lost if a student is sent to timeout. Both points are lost if a behavior note is sent home.
· Each 9 weeks a student can earn up to 36 points for his/her Conduct grade.
o 31 – 36 points = S
o 24 – 30 points = N
o 0 – 23 points = U
If your child is sick or injured and cannot participate in PE, please send a written note indicating the reasons and the length of time he/she must be excused. An alternate activity relating to the lesson will be provided. For lengthy illness or injury, a note from a physician is needed.
